Brewing Truth, Not Just Coffee.
Welcome to the Barista Manual Test Kitchen.
Our Story: The Quest for the Perfect Extraction
Let’s be honest: building a café-quality espresso setup at home is overwhelming. The market is flooded with marketing fluff, overpriced machines that underdeliver, and cheap grinders that ruin perfectly good beans. We know, because we’ve bought them, tested them, and been frustrated by them.
Barista Manual was born out of a simple obsession: to demystify the science of espresso and help home brewers make smart, informed decisions without wasting thousands of dollars. We aren’t here to sell you the most expensive gear; we are here to find the gear that actually works for your workflow, your budget, and your palate.
Meet the Editor: Marcus Vance

With over a decade behind the commercial espresso bar and a formal background in mechanical engineering, our Lead Equipment Editor, Marcus Vance, approaches coffee gear differently. He doesn’t just read the spec sheets—he takes the machines apart.
Marcus obsesses over the things that actually impact your cup: burr alignment, temperature stability, pump pressure consistency, and workflow ergonomics. When he isn’t dismantling dual-boiler machines in the lab, he’s dialing in light roast single-origins to absolute perfection.
The Barista Manual Standard: How We Test
Trust is earned in the cup. That’s why our review process is rigorously independent and highly technical:
- Hands-on Benchmarking: We don’t write reviews based on stock photos. If we recommend a grinder or a tamper, it means it has been subjected to rigorous daily use in our test kitchen.
- Particle & Extraction Analysis: We evaluate grinders based on actual particle size distribution (minimizing boulders and fines) and machines based on thermal stability during back-to-back shots.
- The “No-Nonsense” Guarantee: If a product has a fatal flaw—like excessive grind retention or an unstable steam wand—we will tell you. We highlight the trade-offs so you know exactly what you are buying.
